"We are Going to make it Easy on You"

Working for Olive Garden here in Mishawaka is a delightful experience at times, but like any other job it can be stressful at times. If you have ever ate at Olive Garden maybe you have heard about the all you can eat soup, salad, and breadsticks.
This is advertised on commercials all the time and is a good deal, but hearing the words, "Were going to make it easy on you. I’ll have the soup, salad, and breadsticks." is like hearing sharp nails screeching on a chalk board.
Serving our guests the unlimited amounts of soup, salad, and breadsticks is the hardest and most annoying job at the Olive Garden, especially if you're a big eater.
Every single soup, salad, and breadstick you consume is rapidly prepared in the back by us and only us. We fight in the back about who will refill the pan with the freshly prepared soup from the cooks, and we rush to get the chunkiest parts of the soup. Just how you like it.
If you have ever eaten our soup and you noticed it was pure broth, now you know why.
The race to take as many breadsticks as you can before they run out or get cold is a constant battle amongst us Olive Garden servers and sometimes if you’re lucky, you will arrive to a brand new freshly cooked batch.
The stressful job of soup, salad, and breadsticks is extremely tiring, but the worst part about it is that tip you receive for all that running doesn’t ever exceed $2, due to the price of the special.
Being a server for Olive Garden, like I said before, is a pleasure, but Mr. Soup, Salad, and Breadstick Special, we servers despise you!

  1. Wow, I never knew that the servers did all that. I always thought that it was a prep cook. It is interesting how different things are from what they seem when you get into a restaurant. Though I will admit I love the soup, salad, and breatstick deal and probably will continue to order it, I will probably leave a bigger tip.

I would hope that people would treat their servers nicely, especially since servers are the ones dealing with thier foods.

  2. Girl i feel you, i've been a server for almost a year now and people really don't realize all the work that's required! Don't even get me started on the one customer that knows exactly what to do to ruin the rest of your day. I've noticed myself becoming more patient (and also tipping generously) when out to restaurants because i know what they go through. I'm glad you're starting a blog to let people in on our serving world! Good Luck!

  3. I think you make a really good point concerning specials such as the one at Olive Garden. Not only does have a special like that put a huge amount of added pressure on the servers, but I would assume that when there is a special people tend to spend less (excluding drinks and such) and since most people are unlikely to know the amount of extra work servers experience they likely still leave a standard tip. In fact it is likely that since the servers have to fight for resources many guests end up getting upset with the service and leave a lower tip. This was a real eye-opener for me.
